Before + After - The Poppy Suite

When we decided to come to Charleston, we rented our Michigan home to a family for the year. In the fall of 2021, that year had come and gone. While trying to find a new family to rent the same home, we came to the realization that it was the perfect time to sell the property and invest in a different one here in Charleston.

Being a landlord from another state isn't EASY, but thanks to Yelp, a lot of things can be handled from far away. So while it was not a major inconvenience, we knew it would just be easier to consolidate our properties to Charleston.

Hello, Poppy Suite.

Named after my grandpa and dad, The Poppy Suite came to us off-market by our fabulous realtor team JDM Property Group. We saw a few other properties that also had their perks, but we knew this one was PERFECT for two main reasons: 1.) It's zoned in the short term rental district and 2.) it's literally at the end of our street, so it just couldn't be more convenient. Joel and Lexi got to work locking it in for us.

Because we did not live in the Michigan home for 2 years, taxes would have been very high to sell the property, which is why we chose to essentially swap the old property for a new one by doing a 1031 exchange. A month and a half, and a few complications/headaches later, it was ours.

Quick Turnover

We knew exactly how we wanted the property to look and feel. Thanks to Canva, I created mood boards for every bedroom and space. So during the month and a half that we were waiting to close, our house slowly became a catch-all for everything I purchased from Facebook Marketplace, Home Goods, etc. Doing this kind of stuff is not always as fun as it looks. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of fun most of the time, but the pictures below still give me the heebie jeebies. Living through that chaos was not easy for me.

Work in Progress

My sister helped paint for a weekend when she was visiting (good job and huge thank you, my sweet little apprentice), and in the next two weeks Chad and I finished almost every project on our own. SWEAT EQUITY!!!!
